What are Examples of Good Headshots?

Hey there, fellow thespians! Are you tired of headshots that make you look more like a startled owl than a seasoned actor or actress? I hear you. As an NYC headshot photographer and an actor myself, I know the struggle of capturing that perfect shot. Let’s dive into what makes a headshot truly shine.

What Makes a Headshot Stand Out?

Authenticity Is Key

First and foremost, authenticity is a must. Casting directors are on the lookout for real people, not mannequins. Your headshot should capture your essence, whether you’re dreaming of Broadway, film, TV, or even musicals. In a place as bustling as New York, standing out is essential, and nothing does that like genuine expressions.

Crystal-Clear Quality

Blurred lines might be good for songs, but not for headshots. High-quality images with sharp focus on your eyes can make a world of difference. After all, the eyes are the windows to the soul, right? Let your soul shine!

Proper Lighting

If you think the difference between a good and a great headshot is just about the lighting, you’re not far off. Proper lighting can highlight your features and make your skin glow (in a good way!). Say goodbye to dark circles and shadows that make you look like you just walked off a horror film set. Another reason to make sure you get a proper NYC headshot photographer and not your iphone.

Essential Elements of a Great Actor Headshot

Headshot Photography Techniques

  • Framing and Composition: Your face should be front and center. No weird angles that make you look like you’re about to topple over.
  • Background Choice: Simple, non-distracting backgrounds are best. We want to see you, not what’s behind you.
  • Wardrobe: Solid colors and simple patterns work best. Avoid noisy prints that steal the spotlight from—well—you.

Character and Emotion

Your headshot should convey a range of emotions and character types. Are you the brooding hero, the quirky sidekick, or the villain everyone loves to hate? Show it!

  • Expressiveness: Practice different facial expressions to show versatility.
  • Subtlety Over Exaggeration: Think nuanced emotions, not exaggerated faces.
  • Confidence: Confidence is compelling. It tells casting directors you’re ready for the role.

Trust the headshot photographer you’ve chosen to help you feel comfortable and evoke the emotions/character you’re targeting.

Examples of Good Headshots

The Natural Look (I call this the NY Headshot)

Nothing beats a natural look. Imagine a headshot where you’re caught in a candid moment, a soft smile or a thoughtful stare. It’s all about looking like yourself on a good day, not an overly airbrushed version of you. A plain solid shirt is all you need for this.

The Theatrical Headshot

This is for the actors looking to do some more grounded straight plays. Like Chekov, Tennessee Williams, Theresa Rebeck, etc. This shot could be combined with the “The Natural Look.” Meaning you can use this shot for your natural looking headshot as well. It all depends. Neutral colors with thoughtful expressions and really allowing the eyes to pop!

The Commercial/Comedy/Musical Theatre Headshot

All of these need a smile and a bit of pop to your shot and therefore can be combined for the same shot. You want to show your fun, charismatic side for these shots. All colors can work, but if you’re one who loves their neutral colors – try to shift a bit more with light, maybe a brighter blue or brown. Smile during these shots, but make sure it’s a real smile and not a one you’re putting on just for the camera. The camera can tell it’s a fake smile and so can we! This is where you have to rely  a lot on your photographer to get you to authentically smile.

The Procedural Headshot

This is the shot aimed to grab those SVU, Law and Order type shows. They are grounded in reality and not much room for smiles and jokes. So match the vibe! And who are you in this world? The lawyer? The victim? Etc. This is shot with subtlety, neutral colors.

The Suburban Headshot

Isn’t it interesting when you come to NYC and see how everyone dresses and expresses themself? And then you travel back home or to anywhere that is not a major city and the style is quite different, including the atmosphere, the attitude, the culture. Well, guess what? There are a lot of shows set in the suburban world and you need to tell casting directors who you would be in this world when you take away the “City Style.” Could this be achieved in one of the headshots listed above? Yes! But it’s listed just to make sure you have it. This can be shot in many different directions depending on who you are and what specific shot we are going for. Remember this is not “Sex in the City” style, this is a stripped down version that if you walked down the sidewalk wouldn’t garner too much attention.

Tips for Choosing the Best Actor Headshot Photographer

  • Portfolio Review: Check out their previous work. Do they have experience with actors? Do their photos resonate with you?
  • Client Testimonials: What are other actors saying? A reliable photographer will have glowing reviews.
  • Consultation: A good photographer will offer a consultation to understand your needs. Communication is key!
